Right Hand Warm-Up Exercise for Flatpicking Guitar

When it comes to flatpicking, the right hand is where your tone, rhythm, and accuracy are born. A great way to prepare for practice or performance is by starting with a simple but powerful right hand warm-up exercise.

In this lesson, I’ll share a 3-note picking pattern that moves across all six strings using only the G and E minor chords.

This exercise will help you:

  • Improve string crossing – smooth transitions from string to string

  • Develop accuracy and consistency – every note rings clear

  • Build tone control – learn to play evenly and with intention

It’s also short enough to add to your daily practice routine, but effective enough to make a big difference over time.

Whether you’re just starting with flatpicking or you’ve been playing for years, this warm-up will keep your picking hand relaxed and ready to play tunes at your best.
